We owe everything to the developers

For some time now, several developers have been porting the Google Camera app to some smartphones, with the goal of offering Pixels the camera capabilities they have.

Two of the smartphones that received the port are the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. After a long time, the latest flagships of the Chinese company gain access to a great advantage offered by the Google Camera app.

Port upgrade and new features

The ports of the Google Camera app have been available for the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro almost since the day they were released, but they had a major limitation. OnePlus APIs did not allow developers to access the ultrawide camera, telephoto lens, and macro sensor without at least rooting the smartphone.

Now, a member of the XDA Developers, Urnyx05, has created a new port that activates more cameras on the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. The port of Urnyx05 can access the ultrawide and telephoto lens, on both smartphones. Although macro access is not yet possible, the progress made by Urnyx05 is significant.

Why is this change important? Under normal circumstances, the main camera works on smartphones and the auxiliary cameras are activated on a case-by-case basis. Using more cameras offers better photographic results, in some cases.

To access them, one had to go through a complicated process. However, after installing the Google Camera app, the user can simply go to “Settings> Advanced> Auxiliary Camera” and in this menu, they will find two switches, one for the 0.5x ultrawide sensor and one for the 2.2x sensor of the telephoto lens.
