Lightroom upgrade deleted photos and presets of iPhone and iPad users

A new headache was found yesterday by those who upgraded to version 5.4 of Lightroom. Users of iOS and iPadOS devices found a little surprise after the upgrade, as all their photos were lost, while most report that their presets were completely lost.

The first reports started immediately after the upgrade, with users reporting the problem to the official Photoshop forum.

During the day there was a wave of complaints, while on Reddit users made posts with similar experiences. Unfortunately, those who have not used Adobe Cloud have absolutely no way of getting back to work.

As Adobe officially announced, there were no problems with its application for Android, nor in desktop applications or Lightroom Classic for macOS and Windows.

The company has already released a new update (5.4.1) that prevents this problem. However, it notes again that this update can not restore any lost files to users who have already been affected.

You can read the full response and resolution to the forum thread below. This was posted to the forums by Adobe ‘Quality Engineer Customer Advocate’ Rikk Flohr:

  • We are aware that some customers who updated to Lightroom 5.4.0 on iPhone and iPad may be missing photos and presets that were not synced to the Lightroom cloud.
  • A new version of Lightroom mobile (5.4.1) for iOS and iPadOS has now been released that prevents this issue from affecting additional customers.
  • Installing version 5.4.1 will not restore missing photos or presets for customers affected by the problem introduced in 5.4.0.
  • We know that some customers have photos and preset that is not recoverable. We sincerely apologize to any customers who have been affected by this issue.
  • If you are affected by this issue, please refer to the information this forum thread.
