Samsung’s average smartphone price in the first quarter hits a 6-year high

Driven by the strong demand for foldable phones and their flagship smartphones, Samsung Electronics Co.’s average smartphone selling price (ASP) in the first quarter of this year reached its highest level in six years.

According to data from Strategic Analytics, the average smartphone price of Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, during the period from January to March was US$292 (approximately RMB 2067), an increase of 8.5% over the same period last year. The quarter increased by 20.7%.

Statistics show that Samsung’s ASP in the first quarter marked the highest value since the second quarter of 2014 when the figure was $297. The South Korean technology giant’s smartphone ASP is $247 in 2019, $251 in 2018, and $243 in 2017.

Samsung’s higher ASP comes from the sales of its foldable mobile phone Galaxy Z Flip and high-end Galaxy S20 series.

Mainly due to the strong demand for high-priced smartphones, in terms of revenue, Samsung’s share of the global smartphone market rose from 21.7% in the same period last year and 14.4% in the previous quarter to 22.1% in the first quarter of this year. Apple ranked first with a 37.5% share in the first quarter.
