iOS 14: Users of the beta version report 4K support on YouTube

YouTube might be the most well-known streaming service in the world, yet Apple device clients can’t afford to appreciate the substance in the best resolution. That is on the grounds that Apple has since quite a while ago would not bolster Google’s VP9 standard, constraining the resolution to 1080p and 60fps.

However, it seems that Apple is taking a step back and will support codec VP9 in the upcoming iOS 14. Many users who have installed the first iOS 14 beta developer report that they can now select video quality in the best possible resolution. More specifically, they can now watch videos at 2160p HDR resolution, at 60fps, without knowing if decoding is done via GPU or software. Apple has officially announced that in the upcoming firmware update of tvOS there will be 4K HDR video support for the Apple TV 4K model. However, the fact that there has been no similar announcement for iOS and iPadOS may mean that the company has not yet decided whether to actually give VP9 support to these operating systems and is just being tested.

Reports so far come from users of specific models, specifically those with OLED screens. Of course, only iPhone OLED models have 2K resolution, so the company may not even bother to support the other models. It is also interesting to note that despite the iPhone reports, no iPad model with iPadOS 14 is supported, which greatly strengthens the theory of trial operation.
