1.1.1.1 public DNS to block malware and adult content

Cloudflare announced the launch of the 1.1.1.1 public DNS service. Two years later, it has become the world’s second-largest public DNS resolver after Google.

On the day of April Fools’ Day this year, Cloudflare said that they received requests from home users who wanted to ensure that they had a certain degree of security threat protection and prevent children from accessing adult content. To this end, the team launched a DNS service extension called 1.1.1.1 for Families, adding a new DNS server IP address to the service and filtering it to automatically block certain requests.

1.1.1.1 for Families is easy to set up and install, users only need to change two numbers in the home device or network router settings: primary DNS and secondary DNS.

There are two default options:

  • One Blocks Malware
  • Blocks Malware and Adult Content.

The user can select the desired setting based on the configured IP address.

One Blocks Malware

Primary DNS: 1.1.1.2

Secondary DNS: 1.0.0.2

Blocks Malware and Adult Content

Primary DNS: 1.1.1.3

Secondary DNS: 1.0.0.3

For IPv6 use:

One Blocks Malware

Primary DNS: 2606: 4700: 4700:: 1112

Secondary DNS: 2606: 4700: 4700 :: 1002

Blocks Malware and Adult Content

Primary DNS: 2606: 4700: 4700:: 1113

Secondary DNS: 2606: 4700: 4700 :: 1003

In the coming months, Cloudflare also plans to define other configuration settings for 1.1.1.1 for Families, including options for creating specific whitelists and blacklists for certain websites.
